A-SAFE is a global company, with subsidiaries and resellers working with businesses across five continents – but there are plenty of sites local to A-SAFE’s Yorkshire headquarters that have become long-standing and ongoing business partners.
Mars Petcare in Birstall and Haribo in Pontefract have close working relationships with A-SAFE, and another manufacturing giant, Coca-Cola, contacted A-SAFE to enhance safety at their 77,000 square foot European Centre for Excellence in Wakefield.
Coca-Cola worked with A-fax (the company that became A-SAFE) as long ago as 2000, when they purchased 10,000 units of plastic pallets for their manufacturing plant in Eritrea, Africa – since then A-SAFE have supplied safety barriers to a number of Coca-Cola sites, including Brisbane, Sochaux and Norway among others. Health and safety is vital to all businesses, and this is especially the case with a company as big as Coca-Cola.
Health & Safety is a key consideration for all modern businesses, and for a company the size of Coca-Cola it is a priority.
Managers at the Wakefield site, which has up to 600 employees working on it at any one time and is 77,000m2 in size, wanted safe walkways for pedestrians, with proper segregation from workplace vehicles. Additionally, they wanted to address impact risks to fences and gates at entry points to the facility.
Finally, large gas tanks near the front of the building required the best possible protection from moving vehicles – needless to say, an impact on them could have disastrous consequences. With vehicles coming, going and moving round site, and up to 600 employees working at any one time, the best safety possible is required for one of the world’s biggest companies.
Firstly, Coca-Cola had the risk of vehicle impact on the fences and gates at entry points to the factory. With these pressing issues in mind, A-SAFE had the perfect solutions.
The consultation team made the short 20-mile trip from A-SAFE HQ to Coca-Cola in Wakefield and, after discussing options with the site managers and providing CAD drawings and risk assessments, a plan was agreed.
Pedestrian Barriers were installed strategically around the site, not just to provide protection for personnel, but to clearly define walkways and offer best segregation practice between vehicles and pedestrians. In a facility, this type of segregation should be a paramount and built into any installation. A key part of the segregation is to remove dangerous crossing points – the areas where vehicle routes and pedestrian routes intersect.
A-SAFE’s flexible Bollards were placed at the entrance to the site, protecting the fences and the gates. Clearly, impacts on these vital structures would be a major issue and A-SAFE’s Bollards not only offer robust impact deflection they are primarily a high visibility deterrent and warning to vehicle drivers.
Finally, the critical area around the gas tanks needed strong and resilient protection – but the tanks happened to be situated in an area of pedestrian activity. Therefore a run of Traffic Plus Barriers were installed – these multi-functional barriers offer both heavy duty protection for the gas tanks against vehicle impacts but also offer guidance to pedestrians in a similar way to Pedestrian Barriers.
On top of these safety considerations, Coca-Cola required minimal onsite disruption and facility downtime.
The A-SAFE installation team managed to fit the entire run in super-quick time, allowing Coca-Cola to remain fully functional on site and retain their day-to-day operations without any safety concerns.
The vulnerable areas were transformed, with Bollards protecting the entrance and Traffic Plus Barriers protecting the gas tanks. Crucially, Pedestrian Barriers clearly defined pedestrian routes and offered unbeatable segregation between personnel and workplace vehicles.
On top of the safety aspect, Coca-Cola also minimised their environmental credentials through choosing A-SAFE barriers. When matched against steel equivalents A-SAFE offer a 4.5X improved carbon footprint. Of course, the uniform aesthetic appeal of A-SAFE barriers also offer a visually pleasing aspect to the end installation.
